{GIVEAWAY} Nairns Oatcakes & Cookies (Plus, a Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookie Smoothie)

September 13, 2014

Cookies! And, not just any cookies.  These cookies are FREE, FREE, FREE of dairy, wheat and preservatives.  The babies are loaded with fibre with the main ingredient are whole grain oats and they make the perfect back to school or work snack.  Nairn’s Canada sent be a big ‘ol package of their cookies and crackers (note: some of the products do contain dairy but a majority do not) and I’ve been having fun ever since.

Nairn’s have been baking oatcakes since 1896 so they know their oats. They only use wholegrain oats grown in the nearby Scottish Borders where the climate is perfect for slowly ripening the grains. Nairn’s also has a wide range of gluten-free oatcakes, cookies and oatmeal. None of their products contain any artificial colourings, flavours or preservatives.

Scared of carbs?  Well, you shouldn’t be.  Oats are high in fibre and contain complex carbohydrates which are perfect brain-boosting foods.  Carbs equal energy and we need it to make it through the day.  They are particularly vital after strenuous activity such as exercise. If you’re packing you’re little kiddies lunch boxes, you’ll want to be amping up the oats.

I loved the Light & Crispy Oat Crackers with Sunflower Seeds for a great mid-day snack with a little drizzle of sunflower seed butter.  Don’t get me started on the Stem Ginger Oat Cookies – I devoured them (all of them).  And, on a recent trip to the Okanagan, my husband was reaching for the Scottish Oat Crackers in Cheese flavour.  Any of the crackers make a perfect snack when topped with some nut/seed butter, avocado, vegetables, hummus (my favourite) or  to dip into a soup.

Those cookies I was raving about?  Well, I took the Dark Chocolate Oat Cookies and incorporated them into a healthy smoothie for back to school or a mid-day pick me up which I like to call a Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookie Smoothie.  (If you don’t have the cookies for the smoothie, don’t worry.  I’ve given ingredients for the non-cookie version too).

And, if you want to switch up the flavours and use the mixed berry oat cookie, swap out all the chocolate (that may be crazy but…) and add in some frozen berries to make it a Berry Oatmeal Cookie Smoothie.

These make the perfect back to school smoothies or for the kid in all of us, it’s even more perfect pre/post workout or a nice healthy snack.
