DIY – Homemade Potpourri!

Growing up, my mother would have potpourri all over the house.  In the living room, bedrooms and the bathroom.  I’ll admit, they sure did smell good. But, knowing what I know now, the perfumes were likely synthetic and toxic.

I thought I would share this truly inexpensive, creative way to add some healthy, Christmas scents into your home. Or, simply find little glass jars, wrap them in a bow and use them as a hostess gift over the holidays!

You’ll need a variety of the below ingredients:

 Your favourite whole spices and herbs.  Here are few recommendations:

Orange, lime, lemon peels
Star Anise
Bay Leaves
Cinnamon Sticks
Vanilla Beans, cut into small pieces
Cardamom Seeds
Dried Apple Slices
Candied Ginger
Whole Cloves
All Spice
Whole Nutmeg

Add 3-5 drops of your desired essential oil. Here are some recommendations:

Cinnamon Bark essential oil
Cassia essential oil
On Guard Protective Blend
Vetiver essential oil
Wild Orange essential oil
Clove essential oil
Ginger essential oil
Cardamom essential oil


1. Place desired herbs and spices into a container or bowl. Mix and assemble as desired.
2. Add 3-5 drops of your favourite essential oil or mix a few up.
3. Set in a decorative bowl and every few days, add a additional drops to refresh the scents.
