I just returned from my parents home in Ontario just this past week. We did a lot of resting and relaxing after a pretty chaotic week at work (and life for that matter). We’ve spent some time with my brothers and their family in a cottage (total “summer in Ontario life”). We then went home to my parents house where I spent a boat load of time in my mom’s garden and my dad’s cabin. Because the town where my parents live is a couple of hours from most major cities, a lot of time is spent outdoors. Fine by me – there is nothing better than Vitamin N! I want to tell you a quick little story that continues to come up for me as I work with women both in my nutrition practice but even in my daily job. And, it’s all about the importance of supplementing, especially if we’re feeling mentally exhausted or even restless for that matter.

I often work with women or listen to women who are struggling with losing weight. “I’ve been working out every day and yet I can’t lose those last 5 pounds”. Or, “I eat so healthy! I’m paleo – I’m vegan – I’m macrobiotic! And, still, I can’t lose it”.
“Julie, are you okay”. My husband asked. We were having our usual weekend long coffee in a local coffee shop. It’s a weekly tradition for us both to sit for a good hour or two where I catch up on emails, newsletters, blog posts etc. “Why?” I ask. “You just seem ‘out of it'”. Lethagic, low energy, distant.

What I have learned in my own wellness journey is that only I can make the changes that will impact my health. It is my choice to pick up that candy bar. It is my choice to make a nutritious smoothie every morning. It is definitely my choice if I choose to surf Instagram versus trying to get a restful sleep.
